Devo-tees: Future Islands

Baltimore trio Future Islands answer one of rock music's long-pondered questions: what would it sound like if Tom Waits fronted The Human League? Wait...what's that you say? No one has ever asked that question? Fair enough.  But, if one had asked, it turns out the answer would be: pretty rad. The band is part of a Charm City music renaissance that has occurred in recent years, a renaissance that includes Beach House, Dan Deacon, and of course Animal Collective (who have since re-located north).  While they refer to themselves as "post-wave" (we'll forgive them for that one), they are more accurately described as pre-wave, owing a great deal to New Wave progenitors such as the aforementioned Human League, New Order, and the massively under-appreciated Devo.  Such pedantry, however, is beside the point; their new record In Evening Air, released earlier this year on Thrill Jockey, is propulsive, packed with melody, and brimming with emotional resonance.  A sampling of the band's work below:
