Southern Hospitality

FP is on location in Athens, Georgia for the next few days for no reason in particular.  As many know, Athens is a town with a rich pop music history.  Everyone is familiar with the B-52s and REM, and indie types will know the Olivia Tremor Control and Of Montreal, but the list runs much longer than this.  Below I have included some songs not by Athens bands per se but which nonetheless maintain a tenuous connection to the Classic City (yes, they call it that).

Deerhunter frontman Bradford Cox (also of Atlas Sound) was born in Athens in the early 1980s.  His band, whose record Microcastle is easily among the best of the last five years, is now based in Atlanta.

Deerhunter - Little Kids

Danger Mouse, best knownfor his work in the Gorrilaz, Gnarls Barkley, and as a mash-up pioneer for his Grey Album, DJ'd for a college radio station in Athens in the late 1990s (sadly Athens cannot claim Ghostface).

Dangerdoom - The Mask (featuring Ghostface Killah)

Pavement has no connection with Athens other than a fascination with REM, particularly REM's sophomore album Reckoning;  Their song "Unseen Power of the Picket Fence" from the No Alternative compilation (as well as the reissue of their own sophomore album Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain: LA's Desert Origins), is a tribute to Athens' most successful band.  The CR, CR resissue also features a cover of REM's "Camera" from Reckoning.
